Policy of Ring-Fence and Subsidiary Alliance

Policy of Ring-Fence:
- The policy of Ring-fence was introduced by Lord Wellesley, the Governor-General of India from 1798 to 1805.
- It aimed at creating buffer zones around the British territories in India to defend the company's frontiers.
- The policy involved the establishment of a chain of British protectorates around the British territories to prevent the expansion of rival European powers and Indian states.
- The policy was implemented through treaties with Indian rulers, which granted the British the right to intervene in the internal affairs of the Indian states in return for protection against external threats.

Policy of Subsidiary Alliance:
- The policy of Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley in 1798 as a modification of the policy of Ring-fence.
- It was aimed at strengthening British control over the Indian states by making them dependent on the British for their security and survival.
- The policy involved the Indian states entering into a treaty with the British, under which they agreed to maintain a British subsidiary force in their territory and to pay for its maintenance.
- The policy also required the Indian states to surrender a part of their territory to the British and to allow British residents in their courts to supervise their administration.
- The policy was implemented through treaties with Indian rulers, which ensured British control over the Indian states without the need for direct military intervention.

Hyderabad, Avadh, and Marathas and the Subsidiary Alliance:
- The Indian states of Hyderabad, Avadh, and Marathas were among those who accepted the policy of Subsidiary Alliance.
- The Nizam of Hyderabad, the Nawab of Avadh, and the Peshwa of Marathas entered into treaties with the British, which made them dependent on the British for their security and survival.
- The policy of Subsidiary Alliance was a significant factor in the expansion of British control over India and the decline of the Indian states.

Consider the following statements. 1. Policy of ring-fence was aimed ...
  • This policy was reflected in Warren Hastings' wars against the Marathas and Mysore, and aimed at creating buffer zones to defend the Company's frontiers.
  • The main threat was from the Marathas and Afghan invaders (the Company undertook to organize Awadh's defence to safeguard Bengal's security).
  • Wellesley's subsidiary alliance policy was an extension of ring-fence—which sought to reduce states' dependence on the British Government in India. Major powers such as Hyderabad, Awadh and the Marathas accepted subsidiary alliance.
